November 2026

This Month in Big Sky

Big Sky doesn’t wait for the calendar to catch up. Every month has its own rhythm — openings, traditions, and a handful of things worth knowing before you arrive. This is the hare’s field report for November.

November is the quiet month with a loud finish. The last of the fall color fades, the canyon turns steely, and the whole valley starts counting down to opening day. Here’s what's going on, what's worth the drive, and what we can take off your plate.

The Gallatin Canyon Turns Wintry

By mid-November, the canyon along Highway 191 is reliably snow-covered and the drive itself becomes part of the experience. The Gallatin River runs alongside the road the whole way — watch for ice forming at the edges, which is a reliable sign the mountain is cold and the snow is good. Give yourself extra time and enjoy it.

Before the Rush

Downtown Bozeman Before the Rush

November is one of the last quiet months in Bozeman before the holiday crowds arrive. Main Street is walkable, the restaurants have tables, and the shops are stocked with Montana-made gifts. Worth an afternoon — pair it with a stop at MAP Brewing, a meal at Blackbird Kitchen, or a browse through Country Bookshelf.

Downtown Bozeman

A few things worth knowing this month

  • Skiing Thanksgiving weekend? The resort's advice: book lift tickets, lodging, lessons and rentals early for the best prices. Note: Opening week conditions are variable.
  • The drive from Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport to Big Sky takes about 45 minutes in good conditions — plan for longer in snow. We can recommend local car services and shuttles.
  • Temperatures drop fast after dark. A warm base layer, a good mid-layer, and a wind shell will take you further than a single heavy jacket.
  • The Gallatin River runs alongside Highway 191 the whole way to Big Sky. If you see it frozen at the edges, the mountain is cold and the snow is good.
  • Bobcat basketball is a local tradition. If you're in the area on a game night, Worthington Arena in Bozeman is worth the drive — it's loud, affordable, and very Montana.
  • Downtown Bozeman is at its best in November — before the holiday crowds. Main Street has good restaurants, independent shops, and a bookstore worth an hour of your time.
  • Or skip the list: tell us what you need handled, and consider it handled.
